mimisubs (the "Service") provides live English subtitles for Japanese-audio video, delivered via a Chrome extension paired with this website. This page explains what data we collect, why, and how it is handled.

Who runs the Service

mimisubs is operated by an independent developer based in Singapore. Contact: support@mimisubs.com.

What we collect

• Email address. Provided by you when you sign in. Used to authenticate your account and contact you about your subscription.
• Audio chunks (in transit, not stored). While the extension is running, ~6-second chunks of the currently-playing tab's audio are streamed to our server and forwarded to OpenAI's /v1/audio/translations endpoint for translation. We do not retain the audio after translation completes.
• Translated text. The English text returned by OpenAI is sent back to your browser to be displayed as subtitles. When the source video URL matches a known pattern (NicoVideo, TVer, Abema), the cue is stored in our caption cache (keyed by the public video ID and the cue's timestamp) so future viewers don't have to re-translate the same audio. Cached cues are not associated with the user who seeded them in a way visible to other users.
• Usage metadata. For each successful translation we append a row containing your user ID, the estimated audio duration in seconds, and a timestamp, so we can enforce the monthly quota of your plan.
• Billing metadata via Stripe. If you subscribe, Stripe handles payment and stores your card details on its own PCI-compliant infrastructure. We store only the Stripe customer and subscription identifiers and the plan + status returned by Stripe. We do not see or store your card number.

What we do not collect

• The video itself or any visual content of the page.
• The URL of every page you visit. The extension only sends the current tab's URL when you press "Start subtitles," and only the parsed video ID (where one is recognized) leaves your browser.
• Analytics, fingerprinting, or third-party tracking pixels.
• Your name, address, phone number, or any demographic data.

Who we share data with

• OpenAI — audio chunks are forwarded to OpenAI's Whisper translation API in order to produce the English subtitles. OpenAI's API data policy applies; as of writing, API inputs are not used to train OpenAI models by default.
• Stripe — handles all payment processing.
• Resend — sends transactional email (magic-link sign-in links).

We do not sell your data and we do not share it with anyone outside the processors listed above.

How long we keep things

• Account email + Stripe customer ID: as long as your account exists.
• Usage-event rows: indefinitely, for billing-history purposes.
• Cached caption cues: indefinitely, scoped to the public video ID.
• Magic-link sign-in tokens: 15 minutes from issue.
• Session cookies: 30 days.
• Extension JWT: 30 days, stored only in your browser.

Your choices

• Stop translation at any time by pressing "Stop subtitles" or uninstalling the extension. No audio is captured when the extension is not actively running.
• Delete your account by emailing support@mimisubs.com. We will delete your email, Stripe customer link, and usage rows within seven days. Cached caption cues, which are not personally identifying, are retained.

Children

mimisubs is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

If we materially change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and notify active subscribers by email.
